THE DISILLUSIONED
Vs. 1-3
They didn't ask Jesus to come. But they assumed that based on the relationship, He would come, and quickly!
There are just certain things we expect of friends, and when those we love don't meet our expectations we run into conflict.
How many of us have those kinds of expectations of God?
We are serving God with the expectation that if we give, then He should be at our beck and call.
If I give this, what should I expect from you?
Vs. 4
So often we get a word from God and we latch on to one part of it because we don't understand the full context of it, and when things don't happen the way we thought they would, we get angry at God.
Vs. 5 - 6
God's timing stinks from our perspective, doesn't it?
He loves us, so He makes us wait to the point of utter despair? How can that be love?
Jesus was committed to fulfilling His mission. He would not give in to the pressure of men but marched to the drumbeat of heaven.
Why?
So that God may be glorified and that the people's faith would be built up. That is the bottom line of God's dealings with us.
Sometimes, in our limited understanding, the work of the Lord can seem cruel. Especially if our expectations of what He should do are different than His.
Vs. 7-16
We misunderstand God's actions or lack of it because we think He thinks the way we do.
There will always be someone trying to convince you not the respond to the voice of God because your actions seem illogical and suicidal.
The safest place to be is right in the middle of the will of God.
Vs. 25-27
"I am the resurrection and the life"
In the midst of the sorrow and pain Jesus directs Martha's attention to the eternal first.
Vs. 28-37
Jesus responds to each person differently…according to their need.
With Martha, He assured her and challenged her faith. She was the aggressive, task-oriented one.
With Mary, He acknowledged her emotion, as she was the more melancholy, contemplative one.
Vs. 33-35
He wept. Why?
The force of emotion was for a people who just did not get it. They were so caught up in the human condition that they failed to hold on to Jesus.
Jesus' miracles always had moral and eternal purpose. They were not ever simply random acts of power.
Jesus uses the physical, or temporal, to illustrate the deeper need - the spiritual.
Vs. 38-42
"Lord, he's gonna smell by now!"
The stench is always the result when we allow the bitterness and hurt to sit in our souls.
Jesus is about to remove two stones:
One from the tomb.
The stone that blocked their faith – any hindrance to belief.
Lessons we can learn:
- Just because Jesus does not answer right away, does not mean that He does not love us, or hear us, or care.
While the waiting may be painful, God's timing is always perfect.
- Sometimes the Lord will wait in order to accomplish His bigger purposes in us and for His kingdom.
We tend to blame God. "If you had been there, this wouldn't have happened."
But He is saying, "Didn't I ask you to believe?"
- The most difficult time to believe in Jesus is in a crisis of lost hope.
Sometimes we have to get to the end of ourselves, and our expectations in order to be able to see God's purposes accomplished.
- Jesus is able to bring new life to that which has died.
