Proverbs 5

Don’t Share With Strangers

Proverbs 5:15-18

15 Drink water from your own cistern,
running water from your own well.
16 Should your springs overflow in the streets,
your streams of water in the public squares?
17 Let them be yours alone,
never to be shared with strangers.
18 May your fountain be blessed,
and may you rejoice in the wife of your youth.

Be faithful to your spouse! If you don’t apply the wisdom in this chapter, your marriage (or future marriage if you’re still single) is in major danger!

Never share with others what you were only meant to share with your spouse.

My spouse is the only one I will ever be physically intimate with.

My spouse is the only one I will ever be emotionally intimate with.

My spouse is the only one I will ever give my heart to.

My spouse is always the first to hear the good news and celebrate with me.

My spouse is always the first to hear about my struggles and comfort me.

My spouse is the only one I flirt with.

My spouse is the only one I allow my eyes to enjoy and my heart to desire.

Since we started dating, my wife and I decided we would never be alone with the opposite sex. We wont drive in a car alone, meet alone (even at church), or do anything alone with the opposite sex. It’s not because we don’t trust each other but because we value our marriage and have chosen to set these boundaries to protect it.

…never to be shared with strangers. In this passage, a stranger is anyone you aren’t married to. I refuse to share myself with strangers or let strangers share themselves with me. What makes marriage so beautiful is that we share something special that no one else gets to share. We know each other in ways no one else does. We have given each other exclusive rights. And we are committed in a covenant relationship to each other in good times and bad until the very end! It’s exciting and wonderful! Unfaithfulness isn’t an option. It isn’t even appealing because I know it would destroy my relationship with the most amazing woman I’ve ever met!

Life Application

Rejoice in the wife of my youth!

Guard my heart and my eyes from wandering to another… there’s no such thing as harmless flirting or looking!

God, thank you for blessing me with such an amazing wife! You have been sooooo good to me. Although we have had our struggles and have had difficult issues to work through, you have been faithful to us. Thank you! Thank you for giving me a wife who I know is faithful to me. Thank you for helping me to be faithful to her. Please keep us strong and faithful to each other. There is no human relationship I value more than the one I share with my wife. I entrust it to you. Amen.

Proverbs 4

Look Straight Ahead

Proverbs 4:25-26

25 Let your eyes look straight ahead;
fix your gaze directly before you.
26 Give careful thought to the paths for your feet
and be steadfast in all your ways.

What are you pursuing with your life? What are you focused on currently? What do you spend the majority of your time thinking about and desiring? What do you save your money for? What is the most important filter you have when making decisions?

The challenge I feel reading this is to BE PURPOSEFUL! Be focused and don’t get distracted. Think carefully about where you want to go, and once you decide be steadfast about it. Don’t just float through life. Don’t have a ‘go with the flow’ kind of attitude. Life is too short to spend it wandering!

Hebrews 12:1b-2

1b ...let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith.

God is calling us to keep our eyes on Jesus, our finish line, and to run hard after him! Trying to squeeze God into our busy lives is not what Christianity is about. It’s about laying down our busy lives and getting consumed with Jesus, consumed with knowing him and making him known! There are a million things in our peripheral that are trying to distract us from the path God has for us. We must learn to keep our focus straight ahead.

We can’t spend 5 minutes a day in prayer and expect to grow spiritually. We can’t read our Bible’s for 2 minutes today and watch tv for 2 hours and expect to encounter God. It’s time to give careful thought to our paths and how we spend our time, what we pursue and what we spend our money on.

Life Application

Go after God!

Jesus, I fix my eyes on you! I just want you. Remove the distractions. Show me the things in my life that entangle and hinder me from running to you. I don’t want to waste time distracted, picking flowers on the side of the road, when you’ve called me to be running after you. God, consume us! Fill our hearts with passion and cause us to burn for you. Amen.
